Consider this Question: "Why are these behaviours in children called BIPOLAR disorder ??"?
"Its symptoms occur in many psychiatric disorders, and in [NORMAL] children, and the differences between adult and childhood bipolar disorders are striking. This seems to be a diagnosis that [ MUST BE BELIEVED TO BE SEEN ]. But this is [FAITH]; and where faith and marketing dominate, science is [ EXCLUDED]. Many studies of childhood bipolar disorder have been conducted by researchers with financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry. Stronger evidence is needed before advocating the use of [[POWERFUL] and [EXPANSIVE] drugs, and [BURDENING CHILDREN] and their families with the diagnosis of a major mental illness." An answer via The Mail of The New Yorker, in May 7, from the noteworthy Scientist Nicholas Rosenlicht,M.D. Clinical Professor University of California, [SAN FRANCISCO !] School of Medicine San Francisco, Calif. So Bipolar/ Bipopular sing: "When you're going to San Francisco... Don't forget to put Flowers in your hair..." AND California rest in Peace...Priest

i agree. bipolar disorder should never be diagnosed in children. all children are bipolar if you go by the diagnostic criteria. instead of psychotropic meds, what children need is good parenting.

I completely agree that bipolar disorder is over-diagnosed and children (and adults too) are unnecessarily put on expensive medications which have serious side effects. This is happening with other conditions and medications as well. ADHD/ritalin, ED/viagra, and depression/SSRIs, to name a few. I am glad to see a physician point this out and demand stronger evidence before prescribing strong drugs.

Well, I was never diagnosed, but my parents thought I had bipolar... eg depression/aggression alternating with euphoria. My daughter used to be constantly hysterical... My son aggressive. My niece was diagnosed with "Asperger's syndrome". We all have one thing in common: Food Intolerance. We all act perfectly normally when we eliminate from our diets preservatives, flavours, colours, amines, salycilates, glutamates and, to a lesser extent, wheat and milk.
