The biggest chunk of change you'll need will be for first/last/security deposit on your apartment. Even if you get a reasonably inexpensive place, that can amount to $3,000. Other expenses are as listed by the above poster. Generally: Cable--$60/month ISP--$30-60/month (there is no citywide wireless) Utilities--depends on your usage, but probably $40/month Phone--bare minimum is about $20/month Transportation--Muni fast pass is $60/month Food--Depending on if you eat in or out
